# Personal Statement: Art History Beautiful as art can be, it is the narratives that I find most fascinating. There is so much history and culture that comes with every work of art, and I am so interested in understanding those narratives. Art history is the study of those narratives, and the study of the creativity of civilizations. Once, in the museum, I got to finally see, in person, a Renaissance painting that I had only come across in textbooks before. I started appreciating the small details of the painting that I could never really see in the books like the artist’s brush strokes, color variations, intentional placement of every element. With pictures you can get a glimpse of it, but not really experience it. I realized then that studying art is a co-existence of the artist and the viewer. What I have come to love the most about the nature of art is the social commentary that comes with each individual piece built with the economic systems, social values, religious, and political beliefs of that time. If we study art, we can learn so much about ways of being in the world, and how the civilizations we inhabit have been. I am invested in the study of how the marginalized and silenced have expressed themselves and the means by which museums and institutions are reflecting more. I have so much interest, of course, in the study of art history, but also in its application. I am most invested in the ways in which I can make art meaningful and accessible to the public through curation and preservation of culture. I am invested in the ways in which I can make the world more culturally informed and more so through art history. I am looking forward to the comprehensive study of art history that will include research, analysis of numerous mediums and time periods, and interaction with scholarly disputes. Through this new challenge, I am prepared to see beyond my assumptions and sharpen my critical thinking skills that will allow this field to benefit my contributions. The study of art history is a statement of my dedication to appreciating the many ways our existence has been depicted throughout the years.

I hope to explore the contemporary efforts to reexhibit and reassess current museums’ collections to include more marginalized perspectives, and this will serve as a lens to view the larger efforts to create more inclusive narratives of history and society. I hope to work within museums and cultural organizations to advance the appreciation of, and access to, cultural heritage through preservation and dissemination. By engaging in a diverse range of professional endeavors within a museum, specifically in arts administration, curating, and preservation, I am eager to contribute to and further enhance the experiences that museums offer to their communities.
